The Wright Brother's Diary

Big Brother

This last month with all of the colds and flu going around our house, we have been tired, grumpy and sometimes just miserable. But, through all of this, Chase has been so impressive.  He has been such a little trooper, having to stay in and play when Sawyer is sick, having to skip a few play dates, including one this morning.  He has been so concerned for Sawyer and taken such great care of him.  Yesterday, Chase and I took Sawyer to the doctor.  When the doctor was asking me questions and we were discussing Sawyer’s symptoms, Sawyer was getting fussy and crying.  I was trying to soothe him and still answer Dr. Eckert’s questions. Chase, without being asked, came over and put his head to Sawyer’s, scooped his arm around him and gently patted his back and sang to him and Sawyer loved it! He looked up at Chase and touched Chase’s cheek.  I was able to talk to the doctor, even though at this point I didn’t want to take my eyes off of the boys.  I love this bond they share.  I love how close they already are, they play and laugh together, Chase loves to help with Sawyer and is very protective of him and Sawyer giggles and lights up with Chase’s every word and move.

Chase has grown up so much since Sawyer came along.  He helps with Sawyer, helps pick up his toys, he is doing so well in preschool and swimming.  He is playing well with his friends, sharing and laughing with them.  I love this new phase of play that he has entered.  Right now I am watching him have fun and playing very contently with his toys- not quietly, but happily. He role plays with them and my favorite thing is listening to the little scenarios he works out for these characters or figurines he has brought life to.  It is truly amazing watching him go through each stage, I love the boy he has become.

Last week I took Chase to the walk-in Clinic for his cough.  When the nurse came to the waiting room and called his name, he walked up to her and said “I have a bad cough, a runny nose and sometimes I get a fever and throw up”.  She started laughing and thanked him for all of the helpful information.  By the time we left he had requested a copy of his x-ray to take to school for show and tell, and he had 3 nurses in the room talking to him and he was charming them all.  It was hilarious, I really didn’t even need to be there.  For so long I have worried about him coming out of his shell and speaking up for himself- I no longer have to.  He is growing up so fast- and so well.  I am so proud of the person he is.  I know I have said this before, but it is one of my favorite feelings, I don’t just love Chase, I really like him.
