So, recently in school Chase was told a very brief description of Hanukkah. He came home, we talked about it for a few minutes, it was no big deal. Chase did however think it was odd that not everyone celebrates Christmas. So, we decided to celebrate Hanukkah for a day. We celebrated in the same commercial fashion, as we do Christmas- we are nothing if not PC. We ate traditional Jewish foods, told a few stories behind the traditions, listened to some songs, watched a show about Hanukkah, did some arts and crafts, and ended the night playing the dreidel game and lighting the Menorah. When I was putting Chase to bed he told me, “it’s nice to be Jewish”. That was what I wanted him to take a way from it. Yesterday he told me about a few more holiday celebrations and said he’d like to learn about those too.
This was the conversation:
Chase- Mom, did you know today is the second day of Hanukkah?
Me- I did.
Chase- are we Jewish?
Me- no.
Chase- what are we?
Me- just good, regular ole people.
Chase- okay… I didn’t want to be Jewish anyway.
Me-(cringing at the remark, but curious) really? Why?
Chase- they have to light candles everyday. Every! Day!
Me- Catholics do that a lot too.
Chase- I don’t want to be that either…. Can I draw a picture now?
